Boy is a new production from Polka Theatre based on the autobiographical bestseller by Roald Dahl, in which he recounts the remarkable tales from his childhood. It is adapted for the stage by Mike Kenny, winner of the 2001 Arts Council of England Children’s Award.

Set in the schools of England and Wales, Boy is both a moving and devilishly funny account of one child’s experiences during the 1920s and 1930s. It’s clear to see that the larger-than-life characters and situations from Dahl’s childhood have provided the inspiration for many of the books for which he has become so popular the world over. The audience will certainly enjoy spotting the references!

Boy also provides a thought-provoking and challenging look at school life during the inter-war period, suitable for all children aged 8 and above.

Boy features four actors who switch between roles through the use of masks. The production also uses music and video in the imaginative style that has become distinctive of Polka productions.

Polka is one of Britain’s leading producers of theatre for young audiences, and the only one with its own permanent performance space, purpose-built for children. This is the second Roald Dahl show that Polka Theatre has produced, the first being the highly successful The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me in 1992, which was revived in 1999.
