Celebrate The Joy of Singing at the Inaugural Merton SingFest
For the first time in Merton’s history, more than twenty of the borough’s school, amateur and professional choirs are coming together for a unique series of free concerts and ticketed events to celebrate the joy of singing and encourage further participation in choir singing. Merton SingFest takes place between Friday 13th October and Tuesday 17th October 2017.
The Wimbledon Choral Society - a 100-year-old choir of 180-amateur singers that regularly sells out concerts at venues including Southwark Cathedral, Cadogan Hall and the Royal Festival Hall - will feature as one of the amateur adult choirs in ‘A Celebration of Choirs’ on Saturday 14th October, a day of free concerts by local choirs covering a range of choral music at St John’s Church Spencer Hill. Other free events over the weekend include the Merton Schools SingFest on Friday 13th October and Tuesday 17th October, where school choirs across the borough get together to let their voices be heard.
As part of Merton SingFest’s two ticketed events, Sonoro, Wimbledon’s professional chamber choir, presents ‘Song with your supper’ on the evening of Saturday 14th October, a dinner cabaret of popular folk, jazz and classic songs at Sacred Heart Hall. And on Sunday 15th October, singers of all ages and abilities are invited to take part in a Gospel ‘come and sing’ workshop with the Royal Academy of Music’s Professor of Jazz Composition, Pete Churchill, at Merton Arts Space.
