About the West End of London

The geographical definition of the “West End of London” varies as this area is not an administrative one, rather it is a term that dates back to the 19th century and refers to the fashionable entertainment and residential district to the west of the City of London.

London’s West End was developed from the 17th century onwards and is mainly located in the London Borough of Westminster.  This is the area in which most government institutions including Parliament and the Prime Minister’s residence are situated.  Today the West End of London retains many of its grand residences and has most of London’s smart, and by definition, more expensive hotels.  The West End is also home to most of London’s vibrant entertainment, such as theatres, cinemas, nightclubs, bars and restaurants.  This area has many embassies, consulates and important higher education institutions such as Westminster University and Westminster Kingsway Collage.

During the Second World War large parts of the West End and the City of London, just to he east, suffered extensive bomb damage affecting much of the infrastructure and architecture.  After the war, more of London’s West End remained architecturally intact and today much of this area still has its architecturally splendid buildings such as Parliament, the government institutions along Whitehall, major tourist landmarks such as Trafalgar Square, the smart shopping thoroughfare of Regent Street and the religious institutions of Westminster Abbey and Westminster Cathedral.

Hotels in the West End of London

As the West End is, in general, one of the smartest and most fashionable areas of London, with a large concentration of tube and bus routes, hotels here tend to be of the highest quality and consequently expensive.  If you can budget for a holiday in the West End, you will be very near to Regent Street, London’s most famous shopping thoroughfare. Regent Street is home to Austin Reed, Burberry and possibly the most famous toy shop in the world, Hamleys.  Close by, Oxford Street has some of London’s best known exclusive department stores such as Selfridges, Debenhams and John Lewis.

Most of London’s main tourist landmarks like Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, (where the British monarch lives) are also close by.  Piccadilly, which stretches between Piccadilly Circus and Hyde Park Corner has some of London’s most splendid buildings such as the Piccadilly Hotel designed by Norman Shaw in 1908 and Burlington House which still retains some of its original Palladian architecture.  Burlington House is home to the Royal Academy of Arts (founded in 1768), where a broad range of visual arts from the UK and from around the world are given huge prominence in the form of numerous exhibitions throughout the year.

Affordable London Hotels

London hotel prices are down dramtically due to the recession and better exchange rate.

The beneficial exchange rate for tourists and business visitors from North America and Euroland, together with further great promotional deals by London hotels have resulted in accommodation in London and throughout the UK now being substantially cheaper than before the recession.
