Walk
1: Wimbledon
to Tooting (45 minutes, no hills involved)
Our walk
starts outside the Queens Road entrance to the Centre
Court Shopping Centre.
With the Shopping
Centre behind you turn left and cross Queens Road at the
Pedestrian Crossing. Turn right into Princes
Road. Take the first left into Kings road and then
the first right into Dudley Road. Go through the
gate on the left into South Park Gardens, through the middle of the
park and leave by the Trinity Road exit. Turn
right and take the first left into Effra Road.
Towards the end of this long road, on the left, is the
Shree Ghanapathy Hindu Temple. Turn left into
Haydons Road and take the first right into Tennyson
Road. Cross Garfield Road
into the recreation ground. Head for the top right hand
corner of the recreation ground and cross the bridge over
the River Wandle into the Wandle Meadow Nature Reserve.
Continue along the foot path. To the left is a pond
with newts. Take the right path. The
electricity pylons are to your left and the River Wandle
is to your right. At the end of the path take the
upward path which leads you to North Road. Turn left
into North Road and take the first gate on the right which
leads you back into the Wandle Meadow
Nature Reserve. Take the centre path and leave the
nature reserve through the
turnstile on the left into Boundary
Road. Take the third road on the right into Briscoe
Road. Turn left into Colliers Wood High
Street. Go over the railway bridge and you are in
Tooting High Street. Keep going straight on.
After you pass the Tooting Constitutional Club on your
right cross the road using the crossing. Our walk finishes outside Tooting Broadway Underground
Station.
Should
you wish to return by public transport the No. 57 bus
(bus stop is in Tooting High Street outside Sainsbury's)
will take you directly into Wimbledon town centre.
By underground South Wimbledon Station is two stops away
from where you will have a 12 minute walk back to the
Centre Court Shopping Centre.

Walk
2: Wimbledon Station to the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis
Museum.
(20 minutes, some hills involved)
With
Wimbledon Station behind you turn right and go straight
across the traffic lights into Wimbledon Hill
Road. Soon on the right is an architecturally
splendid building which houses Wimbledon Library.
Just a bit further on, again on the right, are the
impressive Bank Buildings. Both the library and
Bank Buildings are listed buildings and only limited
alterations are allowed. This is just as well,
since sadly, just about the whole of Wimbledon Town
Centre has now been demolished to make way for newer
buildings which are of questionable beauty. Turn
right into Woodside and take the first left into St.
Mary's Road. On the right are the imposing mansion
blocks and grounds of Queen Alexandra's
Court. This is a home for elderly ladies who
have a connection with the armed forces of the United
Kingdom. Normally only ladies above the age of 60
are admitted to this home and they must be widows,
divorcees or unmarried daughters of officers or warrant
officers, or they must
themselves be retired female officers or warrant
officers. Continue up the long winding hill
and turn left at the mini roundabout. On the right
is St. Mary's church. At the next mini roundabout
turn right into Church Road. Soon you will see the
buildings of the All England Lawn Tennis Club on your
left. Continue down the hill along Church
Road. The Number 4 gate to the museum is on your
left. The museum is open daily between 10:30 and
17:00 but admission times may vary during the Tennis
Championships. We advise phoning first to confirm
opening times. (020

Walk
3: Wimbledon Lawn Tennis
Museum to Wimbledon Station
(40 minutes, some hills involved)
This
walk follows on from walk 2 taking a different and
longer return route back to Wimbledon Station.
With the Tennis Museum behind you, turn right and walk
up Church Road and take the first right into Somerset
Road. The tennis complex is now to your
right. Take the fourth left into Burghley
Road. As you walk down Burghley Road you will
enjoy a splendid view looking towards St. Mary's Church
in the distance. When you reach the junction with
Marryat Road, look to your left at the panoramic view of
London's skyline. If the weather is clear you will
see the BT Tower and Millennium Wheel on the
horizon. Turn right into Marryat Road. Walk
up the hill until you reach Wimbledon High Street.
If you look across the road and to your right, you will
see the Wimbledon War Memorial with Wimbledon Common
behind it. Turn left into Wimbledon High
Street. Just after the Rose and Crown pub on your
left, you will see Eagle House, a fine Jacobean Manor
House. It was built by Robert Bell, a co-founder
of the East India Company. There are many original
features such as ceilings and fireplaces, 19th century
Delft and de Morgan tiles. Since 1989 the building
houses the Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage
Foundation. Just after
you pass the Brewery Tap pub on your left, you will see
the old fire brigade engine house which was built around
1900. At the mini roundabout turn right and
continue along the high street to the next mini
roundabout. Carry straight on and you are in
Wimbledon Hill Road, going down the steep hill. At
the bottom of the hill on the left you will pass the
splendid architecture of Bank Buildings and
Wimbledon Library, which are mentioned in more detail in
Walk 2 above. Go across the traffic lights at the
Alexandra Road junction and you will see Wimbledon
Station on your left.
