Wimbledon Village Fair
Saturday 19th June 2004
The tradition of a Fair in Wimbledon Village has continued in one form or other
since the early 19th century. The Wimbledon Guild (the local charity that organises the Fair and retains the proceeds from the day) are
determined that the 2004 Fair will be the biggest and best yet.
We are delighted that, for the second year, the All England Lawn Tennis Club is the Village Fair’s main sponsor.
An estimated 20,000 visitors attended the 2003 Fair and the proceeds went to
The Wimbledon Guild whose activities include a Social Welfare department, a
counselling service, Activity & Social Centre, a Computer Centre for older
people, luncheon and other clubs, Rosemary Lodge, a care home with nursing, housing and a charity shop.
The day’s events – centred around Rushmere Pond on Wimbledon Common Southside - start at 8.30 am with the huge Show Jumping event, sponsored by
Robert Holmes & Co., Chartered surveyors and estate agents, which attracts
large numbers of participants and spectators. The Fair itself opens at 10.30
am and other activities include a dog show, sponsored by Holden &
Partners,
architects, continuous entertainment on a central stage (sponsored by Cannizaro Park Theatre Festival), fairground rides and a large craft and
produce stall area, with over 150 stalls both in the open-air and under cover
(FPDSavills, international property consultants, New Wimbledon Theatre and SW London NHS are all sponsoring marquees).
There will be lots of interesting things to eat and drink including the Young’s
beer tent, champagne from Duval Leroy, a hog roast and BBQ, Thai, Indian and Chinese food, (all supplied by local restaurants), a paella stall,
sandwiches, strawberries and cream – and good coffee.
We are delighted that Deen City Farm will be joining us again, we’ll have pony
rides, supported by Wimbledon Nannies, a children’s assault course – and a
joint venture between London Swimming Pools, the London Fire Brigade and Esporta Health Club Wimbledon ….. you’ll have to come along to see what
they’ve got planned!
As the Fair gets bigger, so do the running costs – sponsorship is crucial to
ensure the Fair continues. Other major sponsors include Allen Briegel, estate agents and property consultants, Clear Insurance, and lots of others.
The Fair programme will be sold on the day for £1 per copy, and provides an
invaluable guide to the day’s activities and a ready reference to what the
Village has to offer, both to locals and to outsiders visiting Wimbledon Village
for the first time. It is also your “ticket” to our Grand Draw, which has some
really fantastic prizes including weekends away, restaurant vouchers and fabulous gifts from Wimbledon Village shops.
This is truly a day out for all the family. There is limited free parking all day,
and free entry (we hope you buy a Programme for just £1 though).
See you there – and help us raise as much as possible for the valuable work
of the Wimbledon Guild, and have a great day out at the same time.
